Conjuring Kat

Kat, Incorrigible by Stephanie Burgis

*ARC read via Around The World ARC Tours
*Book will be released April 5, 2011

This book gets a delightful 5 out of 5 gnomes for being old fashioned yet fun all at the same time.  Kat and her sisters are a lot of fun to read about.  The cover of the book also draws you right into the story.

Kat Stephenson is well as the book's title implies, incorrigible.  She's seen as being incorrigible because the book takes place in the year 1803 and she doesn't act like ladies of her time are expected to act.

When the reader first meets Kat she has just cut her hair very short and is trying to run away from home dressed as a boy to try to save the fortunes of her family.  This plan fails and her sister's know what she was up to.

Kat and her two sisters are a force to be reckoned with.  Elissa, the oldest sister, tries to do everything properly lady like but also has an obsession with novels that have tragic gothic heroines.  Angeline, the middle sister, has almost as much curiosity as Kat but some different ideas then Elissa about what a lady should be like. Even though they fight a lot, Kat knows that her sisters will always be there for her.

Her father has a respectable job.  The social problems in the family stem more from the brother Charles who has a gambling problem and the reputation that their mother had.

In this world it turns out that magic is real but also really frowned upon.  Their mother was magical but didn't try hard enough to hide it.  The real fun comes into play when you find out that their mother is not the only one with magic.

The different kinds of magic in this book are fun to read about.  There's the normal witch magic that they already know about and then also some bigger magic.

Lovelorn suitors, magic, highway men, and a quest to see her family happy drive the story forward.  The story has an old fashioned feeling because of the era that it takes place but it is never boring.

Magic and mayhem aplenty can be found throughout the book.  Kat is right in the middle of the magic and the mayhem and causing plenty of trouble.  She must find out who she can trust when the enemy may be staying at the very same house party that her family is.

I can't wait to see what Kat's next adventure will be.

  1. Agh, sounds like a fun book, but I have to be strict and wait to buy it until I've worked my way through my tbr pile. I could try to find a giveaway for it though as I only promised myself to cut back on buying books ;-)

  2. @Sullivan, yeah it's a really fun book and the main character is great. I would definitely try to find a giveaway for it/plan to read it.

I have the same tbr pile problem but mine's a mix of books I've bought/won that I still need to read.

  3. I have this book and haven't gotten to it yet. I think the cover is SO adorable...I can see a young reader wanting to grab it on the art alone.

I had NO clue that the time period was in the early 1800s. Fun! Great review!
