Tasty Treat

Bad Taste in Boys by Carrie Harris

*ARC read via Around The World ARC Tours
*Book will be released July 12, 2011

This zippy zombie read gets 4 out of 5 gnomes for being full of laughs and zombie goodness.  The book is a fast read at only 208 pages and the story moves right along.

Kate is a super scientific girl who's also the football team's student trainer.  She wants to be a doctor and takes every opportunity that will lead her to that goal.   Another intriguing aspect of Kate is that she has epilepsy and the condition doesn't seem to define or stifle her.  Epilepsy is just something she lives with.

Events pick up pretty fast with Katie finding some suspicious vials in the coaches office which make her think that he's trying to artificially improve the horrible football team.

The book, I think is best read if you imagine it more as a zombie movie.  There are some points where you're like wow, why did you not tell anybody what was going on.  But if you look at as more of a movie then you can let go of some of these instances.

Kate seems to represent more of the heroine rooted in reality that doesn't want to admit that there may just be some zombies running around.  Her brother and his friends are more of the role playing types lets kill us some zombies kind of characters.

There is a love interest in the book who Kate has had a crush on for a long time.  Aaron wants to help Kate figure out what is going on but he doesn't ever really seem to be around when the zombies are.

I love all the action in the book especially when they end up carrying around a certain zombified body part in a plastic grocery bag.  There are laughs aplenty and some gory moments that are gross to picture.

The bad guy is unexpected and throws Kate for a loop.  There's a lot of science involved with the bad guy and it seems that Kate is the only one that can figure out how to stop the zombies.

The ending is a lot of fun and has Kate kind of going Rambo on the zombies.  Overall this is a frantic fast read that will leave you laughing and wondering what's going to happen next and who's going to survive.

  2. @Sullivan, cool, yeah it is a really good book especially if you love zombies. :)

  3. I read BTIB and LOVED it!! (and I'm not a big zombie fan) So funny and I totally love Kate. She is a ninja!

  4. My taste usually runs to Jane Austen but I also loved this book - strong female lead and a great spoof of the zombie genre!

  5. @Kiki, yep Kate really is like a ninja:)

@Carole yeah, I liked how strong Kate was as a character and this was a great spoof on the zombie genre.

  6. Carrie's very ninja herself. I'm really looking forward to reading BTIB!

  7. @Angie, Nice well her ninja-ness really does shine through in her writing style.

I would really recommend the book, it's a really fast read and also funny which is always good. :)

  8. I'm a new fan of zombie's after reading this book...though doubting that anyone can make zombies as funny as Carrie Harris!

  9. @Amy, Yeah, the humor in the book made me laugh a lot especially in scenes like the one involving a grill.
