Review - Alien Separation

Alien Separation by Gini Koch

*Read via NetGalley
*Spoilers are highlighted like so :)

5 out of 5 gnomes

Ahhh, that ending and the preview for the next book is exactly what draws me into this series and keeps me hurrying back for more.

I loved the direction this book took because I for one was not expecting it. After the epic events of the last book things took off fast at the start of this one.

Things once again get very interesting when much of the group gets unexpectedly transported to a very colorful planet.

Everyone having to survive and find each other again makes for compelling reading. This new setting was crazy but fun and I loved getting to meet more creatures/aliens.

There were some awesome surprises in this one, including a relationship that I didn’t foresee (yet it’s pretty perfect the more I think about it.)

A plethora of possibilities await and this series never fails to make me happy. I look forward to whatever happens next.

My Favorite Quotes/Lines - Alien Separation

*Read via NetGalley
*Spoilers are highlighted like so :)

“Not sure what was more shocking—discovering that there’s a zillion and one universes out there and I’m representing in most of them, or discovering the identity of the Mastermind.”

“Apparently things were dicey wherever I was. Go me.”

“Because, just like here, you’re still one of the greatest guys I’ve ever known.”

“Aliens were both weird and sometimes very unaware of the best choices for certain jobs.”

“Truly, the fun around here never stopped.”

“Hey, the win column was totally empty at this moment, so I’d take even the smallest victory.”

“Christopher, snuggle up, it’s chilly and I promise not to compromise your virtue.” “Oh, fine.”

“Names are also helpful. Helps a creature know who you’re talking to and that you think enough of it to name them something specific. And all that.”

“Snakipedes, say hello to my leettle friend!”

“I note again that my crazy’s working a lot better than your sanity.”

“Being mature adults really sucks sometimes.”

“You don’t own the franchise on butt saving on Planet Colorful, Meglomaniac Lad, so don’t get uppity.”

“We have heard of Shealla’s wrath, and we will never do anything to bring it upon ourselves.”

“He’s not heavy, he’s my pig-dog brother.”

“Because every worthwhile goal requires sacrifice, courage, and perseverance to achieve.” Cannot argue with that mindset.”

“Welcome to the Army of One, Fancy.”

“Sure, it’s not fair, but then neither is life, right?”

“I knew when not to look at a gift horse’s butt.”

“Apparently I was the designated WTF asker at this time.”

“Wasn’t sure, but probably best to assume glaring unless or until this was proven to be his Pleasant Expression Face.”

“We are proud to call you Warrior Sister.”

“Ah, I loved my work sometimes.”

“Better to die a decent person than live as a vile one.”

“We’d like to live, And, ah, we’d like the fluffy monsters to stop growling at us. And drooling. We’d really like them to stop drooling.”

“And now we’re here to say that we don’t just have one Hulk. We have a plethora.”

New Project - Save the Unicorns

I got the bag of defective unicorns from the Archie McPhee site
I first saw the unicorns on The Bloggess post here then I had the idea to modify these defective unicorns using my 3Doodler pen and Mod Podge melts.

Here are the unicorns I've modified so far in my quest to #SaveTheUnicorns:

"Waiting On" Wednesday - Rogue

"Waiting On"  Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I'm waiting on...

Rogue by Julie Kagawa

* Book will be released April 28, 2015
Check out the description from Goodreads: (I've hidden most of the description because it's full of spoilers if you haven't read the first book.)

"Ember Hill left the dragon organization Talon to take her chances with rebel dragon Cobalt and his crew of rogues. But Ember can't forget the sacrifice made for her by the human boy who could have killed her—Garret Xavier Sebastian, a soldier of the dragonslaying Order of St. George, the boy who saved her from a Talon assassin, knowing that by doing so, he'd signed his own death warrant.

Determined to save Garret from execution, Ember must convince Cobalt to help her break into the Order's headquarters. With assassins after them and Ember's own brother helping Talon with the hunt, the rogues find an unexpected ally in Garret and a new perspective on the underground battle between Talon and St. George.

A reckoning is brewing and the secrets hidden by both sides are shocking and deadly. Soon Ember must decide: Should she retreat to fight another day…or start an all-out war?"

I loved the first book of this series and am really looking forward to this sequel. Can't wait to see who survives and which side wins the war.

My New Hobby - 3Doodler

Check out my newest hobby, doodling with the 3Doodler pen. I love this thing and have made a lot of fun stuff.

Mini-books, I plan to make a whole library :) (my sister came up with the design and it's surprisingly easy.)

Hipster glasses for our cactus.

A glow in the dark bracelet and ring.

Weekend Read - The Wrath and the Dawn

I received this ARC from the First to Read website. I loved the summary of it and want to see where the author takes this well known tale. I’ve started it and like it but it’s been slow going so far.

Review - Talon

Talon by Julie Kagawa

5 out of 5 gnomes

♩♫ I like it, I love it, I want some more of it. ♩♫ As you can see this book has me breaking into country music lyrics (and I don’t even like country music.)

It wasn't what I was expecting at all, I loved it.

The tension, oh the tension while reading this story is so very palpable. The dual point of view really helps this tension and the story zoom right along. Then another point of view is added in the second part of the book which also adds some good intrigue to the mix.

The duality of being a dragon trying to blend into human society also brings some friction to the story and leads to one of the most interesting takes on a love triangle that I've read in quite a while.

With Garret and Ember I like that they both for different reasons are just learning to blend into normal human society. It’s great seeing them grow and start to understand that they might just not belong where they always thought they did.

There’s a lot of wondering which one of them will find out the other’s secret first and what exactly will happen when they do.

The ending was so intense and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Sentence Sneak Peek - Talon

Talon by Julie Kagawa

The first sentence from each chapter of Talon, it's a mini summary of what you can expect to read.

* Spoilers are highlighted like so :)

“Ember, when did your parents die, and what was the cause of death?”

“I crouched in the damp, steamy undergrowth of the Brazilian rain forest, insects humming around me, feeling sweat trickle down my back beneath my combat armor.”

“The ocean wasn’t cooperating today.”

“I wasn’t terribly fond of these clothes.”

“It was late afternoon when we got to the cove, which was flanked on two sides by a wall of windswept cliffs that sheltered it from waves and casual tourists.”

“We drove to the main beach, Tristan and I in the front, our three passengers and a surfboard in the backseat.”

“From the edge of the parking lot, I watched the black Jeep pull onto the road, pick up speed and cruise out of sight.”

“You still haven’t told me the plan, I told Tristan as we walked through a pair of sliding glass doors.”

“Hey, Dante, do you ever miss flying?”

“Come on,” Tristan muttered from the edge of the roof.”

“Lover’s Bluff, as it was called by the locals, was a lonely outcropping of rock that jutted over the ocean, several miles past the main beach and in the middle of nowhere.”

“No luck.”

Made it.

“Fifteen twenty-two, and still no Ember.”

“Garret picked up his board and turned to me, waiting.”

“There you are,” Tristan said as I came through the front door, tossing the keys onto the counter.”

“Ember, you’re not eating.”

“So, you have a possible target now.”

“Hellooooooo.”

“I was beginning to reach the point where Ember’s sudden, random phrases didn’t startle me quite so much anymore, but still, this one threw me a bit.”

“We played three more times.”

“Ember was late again.”

“Ready?”

“The drive back was...”

“Where’ve you been?”

“Apparently, parties at seven o’clock didn’t really start at seven o’clock.”

“Okay, this night was officially weird.”

“I had to get out of there.”

“Garret!”

“That was not the first thing I wanted to hear after returning from a party that, for all intents and purposes, had sucked ass big-time.”

“It was after 2:00 a.m. when I returned home.”

“I was fieldstripping my Glock when Tristan came home.”

“The soldiers were on to me.”

Perfect.

“I watched Riley jog to his motorcycle, swing aboard and roar off down the street.”

“For once, Ember was waiting at our meeting place ahead of me.”

“Movies.”

“Ember smiled and brushed past me, her fingers skimming my arm as she went by.”

“When I maneuvered my way back to the table, Garret was in the same spot, his chin resting on his hands as he watched the milling crowd.”

“No.”

Two dragons were sitting in my living room when I walked through the door.”

“I was soaring the wind currents, the sun warm on my back, the breeze cool in my face.”

“I was finishing a report to Lieutenant Martin when there was a knock at the door.”

“After I left Garret’s apartment, I rode aimlessly for a while, my mind still a chaotic, swirling mess.”

“I lowered the phone, slipping it into my jeans pocket.”

“Mental note: Add riding a motorcycle to the Almost as Good as Flying list.”

“I rode in the back of the truck, pressed between two soldiers, feeling every bump and jolt through the metal bench welded to the sides.”

“Ember followed me down the stairs, where the crack of billiard balls told me exactly how the two hatchlings were getting ready to leave, which was not at all.”

“A shrill beeping cut through the silence.”

“In combat, everything slows down and speeds up at the same time.”

“Cobalt!”

“I didn’t fly far.”

“The raid that evening had been disastrous.”

Where was she?

Lilith,” Riley growled, backing away, as my trainer, Scary Talon Lady herself, sauntered toward us.”

“There’s her car.”

“I opened my eyes as gunfire boomed over the sand.”

“By far, that had been the stupidest thing I’d ever done.”

“Cobalt stopped short as I leaped in front of him, blocking the path to Garret.”

“She’d escaped.”

“I lay on my stomach behind a sand dune, watching the line of soldiers move toward the big brown truck parked behind a boulder.”

“Do you know why we have brought you here, Mr. Hill?”

P.R.R.(Pre Review Ravings) - Talon

These are my P.R.R.(Pre Review Ravings) aka what I think before I write my review.

Talon by Julie Kagawa

* I love reading about dragons.

* Ember and Garret and their alternating chapters make for some great reading.

* So much palpable tension, as you wonder who’s going to find out the other’s secret first.

* Both sides of the story seem to have valid reasons but the closer you look at both organizations will lead to lots of questions.

* Like learning about dragon societies and how the different organizations work.

* A very interesting take on love triangles.

* Lots of unexpected happenings

* That ending was so intense, can’t wait to see what happens next.

Review - Shadow Scale

Shadow Scale by Rachel Hartman

* Read via NetGalley for review

3 gnomes and a gnome hat out of 5 gnomes

The beginning has a weird set up but I guess it’s a good way to go into what happened in the first book/recap it all. It just kind of threw me for a bit of a loop and took a while to get back into the story.

That was quite a twist on a love triangle that you don’t see every day. I think I would have liked to see more of the future of everything.

Seraphina’s search and struggles lead to meeting some really fascinating characters. The different half-dragons were really full of surprises.

There was kind of a messy feel to it all ending wise and some of the characters I feel really weren’t discussed enough I just want to know more about the various half-dragons.

Overall this was pretty great, not what I expected at all though. There is an epic fantasy feel to it all. I wish it had talked about more how the world changed overall. I really really wanted to know what happened with all the quigs.
