"The day they came to tell me, I was in one of the gardens with Kiernan, trying to decipher a three-hundred-year-old map of the palace grounds."
"I stood at the window of the room that was no longer mine."
"So began my life in Treb, a life that, in most ways, I was completely unprepared to live."
"Not everyone was as happy about Tyr as I was, however."
"A long time later, I pushed myself up from the ground."
"I am sorry, but there's really nothing I can do."
"I left the workroom that day feeling buoyant, but if I had thought that the rest of my lessons would be as relatively easy as that first had been, I was mistaken."
"It wasn't as simple as that, though."
"I told Philantha about it after I returned to the house."
"I stood, pressed against the scratchy bushes, and tried to think."
"I slept the rest of the day and woke the next morning only when one of the maids knocked on my door and told me that Philantha was waiting for me downstairs."
"It took six days to reach our destination."
"What?"
"The mausoleum had been built with the centuries in mind."
"Six days later, in the early afternoon, we rode back into Vivaskari."
"Melaina," I said dumbly."
"The next few days passed in a haze."
"She stared at me, one hand going to her chest and a look of discomfort flashing across her face."
"I woke on a pallet in a small dark room with every inch of my body aching."
"Two more meals came."
"We would have to hurry to reach the city before the coronation, but we also had to stay off the road."
"I woke before dawn, while stars still spotted the sky and the others still slept."
"Booted footsteps echoed down the street as Melaina's men saw us standing there, and they put on speed."
"When it was all over, I went home to Philantha."
