This book gets a fantastic 4 gnomes and a gnome hat out of 5 gnomes for being a fun read with great characters that has plenty of twists and turns along with a heaping dose of the paranormal. The summer/delinquent camp setting kind of reminds me of the Percy Jackson series.
The main character, Kylie, is having a host of problems seemingly happening all at once. Her grandma died, her boyfriend dumped her and her parents are getting a divorce. This all is happening in the first chapter. So Kylie does indeed have a lot to worry about including that she seems to be seeing someone that no one else can see.
After being arrested after being at a party where people were drinking her mom decides to send her to Shadow Falls summer camp. Of course this is not an average summer camp or a camp for delinquents like she's led to believe. The camp is really more of a place for paranormals who are either having problems at home or with their abilities/powers.
A love triangle does develop, well a love square at one point with about three potential beaus. It looks like the main guys that she could end up with are Derek, a half fairy with some interesting powers and Lucas, a werewolf with a mysterious past. The triangle and relationships between them though do have some problems. I'm really not sure that she should fully trust either Derek or Lucas. Derek reminds her of her ex-boyfriend and has powers that make her question her feelings. Lucas on the other hand seems to have more chemistry with Kylie but he may be dangerous.
Her roommates at camp are some great characters. Della's a vampire and Miranda's a dyslexic witch. Through these two you see why the camp is needed and that the camp really could help all the different paranormal groups try to get along better.
I really like the scenes between Kylie and another camper, Perry. Perry's one of my favorite characters because of the situations that happen between him and Kylie. I foresee some interesting directions for this character to go in the future.
The big mystery is what exactly Kylie is because one thing's for sure, she's not completely human. The secondary mystery is that the government is looking into the camp and thinks that it may need to be shut down.
This book is chock full of juicy family secrets involving Kylie and in the end their are plenty of mysteries left to solve. Like Kylie I too am curious as to whether death angels are real.
I'm definitely looking forward to the next book and hopefully figuring out what exactly Kylie is.
Even though it has a love square I think i might give it a try if I run across it.
ReplyDeleteYeah the paranormal goodness overrides the love square part. :)
