Sentence Sneak Peek - Blue Sea Burning

BURN HEALY”S PIRATE SHIP was sinking.”

“WE CAUGHT UP with Adonis on the lower deck.”

“THE FOUR OF US stood in the warm light of the setting sun, our backs against the wall beside the poop deck ladder.”

“I HADN’T MISUNDERSTOOD anything.”

HEALY TURNED AWAY from the deck rail and walked back to his spot in front of the crew.”

“THINGS HAD CHANGED at the ugly fruit plantation since we’d been away, and not for the better.”

“SORRY I SLUGGED YE, thanks.”

“AFTER CHECKING THE GRIFT’S STORES against the list of supplies Quint gave him, the purser sent Guts, Kira, and me off with a handful of silver coin to buy extra lumber and nails from Port Scratch’s only store.”

HEALY’S PLAN WAS to intercept Ripper Jones at the mouth of the bay and finish him off, then turn around and come back to sink the beached man-of-war.”

“FIRST, QUINT TRIED to talk me out of it.”

“I SULKED FOR MOST of the next hour as we paddled back through the fog.”

“THERE’S NOTHING QUITE LIKE walking up a busy street in the company of eight terrifying pirates, even if the most infamous of them insists on calling himself “Commodore Longtrousers.”

EGG!

“I WENT TO SEE Burn Healy alone.”

“I WOULD’VE HEADED straight back up the hill to Mr. Dalrymple’s house, but my uncle insisted I have a bath and eat lunch first.”

“WE WERE SITTING at a corner table in a little pub on the edge of town.”

“EVEN THOUGH I HATED Percy’s guts—as a tutor, he’d been lazy, cruel, and shockingly incompetent—he was as good a liar as anybody I knew.”

“TELL ME SOMETHING, old boys . . .”

“THEY’RE PIRATES,” Millicent was saying.”

PLEASE, EGG!

HEALY LED ME UP a winding series of streets into the hills above the fortress, where the houses were set back from the road and so far apart that it was more forest than town.”

“WE SPENT THE NEXT two days getting ready—buying supplies, sewing slings, lashing bundles of long oars to the deck of Cyril’s sloop—and even considering the dread and uncertainty over what we were about to do, it could have been a very pleasant two days.”

“IT’S TOO DARK to maneuver—we’ll break up on the rocks.”

“WE ALL FROZE in place.”

“HOW MANY WERE THERE?”

“WHERE ARE STAIRS to ship?”

IT’S NEVER GOING TO WORK.

“THE FOUR OF US staggered into Blisstown just before sunset.”

“DOWN THE STEPS.”

“MOVE!”

“I WOKE UP.”
