Blurb for The Night Beat:
The majority of Prosaic City’s residents don’t know that their town exists on top of another place -- Necropolis, City of the Undead. For the most part, the two planes of existence manage to remain separate. And when they don’t, Necropolis Enforcement has beings in place to ensure the general human population remains blithely clueless.

Victoria Wolfe is more than just a policewoman. She’s an undercover werewolf assigned by Necropolis Enforcement to work Prosaic City Police’s Night Beat. Victoria’s comfortable working the shift where all the weird comes out to play, especially since her partner is also her perfect man. Or would be, if Victoria could ever work up the nerve to tell him she isn’t like other girls.

It’s hard enough being a werewolf in disguise, but when a creature from the Depths of Hell shows up in an alley preferred by junkies, bums, and hookers, it’s going to take more than just Victoria’s special gun and werewolf skills to subdue the ancient Sumerian demon. Especially when the demon is merely the start of what appears to be a major takeover attempt by the Prince of Darkness.

Soon all of Necropolis Enforcement’s Undead Brigade is involved in the fight to stop the Prince’s Major Minions from taking over Prosaic City and the rest of the human plane. But it’s Victoria who has to face the Adversary and figure out what intricate plan Lucifer has up his wings before everyone she cares about is destroyed.
In other words, it’s just another day on the Night Beat.

Excerpt from The Night Beat by Gini Koch:

Slimy tried to shake me off, big time, but I clamped my jaws harder. Supposedly pit bulls have locking jaws, but they’re Chihuahuas by comparison to a werewolf. If I didn’t want off, I wasn’t going off.
Of course, after being slammed against all three walls of the alley a few times, I was considering the benefits of letting go. The thing was, Slimy was moving towards the street. And a loose slime monster was bad enough, but a loose ancient Sumerian demon crossed with a slime monster was the definition of Foreshadow of the Apocalypse.
My particular tentacle flipped low and I caught that there were at least twenty Dirt Corps members clinging to this thing’s lower half. As I was whipped around, I saw Monty slamming his hands into whatever parts of Slimy he could hit. Considering the fact that liches are stronger than vampires, this should have done something. But Slimy just did his version of a Santa Claus impersonation and shook like a bowlful of jelly.
Ken noticed we were having a little trouble and joined the fray. This was good in that he was the most powerful vamp on the scene, so he could probably do the most damage. It was bad, however, because Ken lost concentration for some reason, and Jack came out of that happy “it’s all good” vamp stupor and took a good look around.
I moved out of werewolf form and into wolf, in the hopes I’d look more normal, so to speak. I also managed to catch hold and dig my claws in so I wasn’t flailing around like Slimy was using me for fly-fishing bait. So I had a good view of Jack.
He was a cop on Prosaic City’s Night Beat. They only took the best, and the ones who could handle the more-than-weird. Even so, he was a human and one of the things those of us in Necropolis Enforcement swore to -- aside from the standard protect and serve stuff -- was that we’d do our best to never let the humans know this wasn’t really their city.
Now Jack was staring at pretty much every undead known to man and a couple man didn’t really know about. All we were missing was a zombie to cover every trope -- the mummies were already there, being dragged along by Slimy -- and the minute H.P. arrived, that was going to be covered, too.
As I tried to figure out which was going to be worse -- Slimy stomping around using my city as a midnight buffet or Jack having to have a serious memory wipe -- he reached into the sedan. And pulled out our riot gun, which was a lot more like a bazooka, and aimed.
“All of you, let go on three!” I knew that tone of voice. It was the one Jack used that told all listeners he was the man in charge.
“Is he serious?” Amanda asked me.
“One….”
“He seems serious,” Maurice offered.
“Two….”
“He means it!” I shouted. “Everybody, do it!”
“Three.”

Bodacious Beat

5 out of 5 gnomes and 5 out of 5 tiara wearing bats

This book is filled to the brim with paranormal goodness.  There is so much happening at once that you get pulled in right away and get taken on quite a wild ride.  I love the world building and the myriad of undeads that there are.  If you're a fan of just about any kind of paranormal creature there's a good chance that you will see them in this book.

Victoria Wolfe is a werewolf who works as both a human policeman and an enforcement officer for Necropolis the city that runs parallel/dimensionally with the human one.  She has a great snarky attitude and a heck of a tragic background.

One of my favorite things about this story is how the werewolves are described/how they live.  First of all the special suit so they don't have to worry about clothes is genius (although itchy :) )(because waking up naked or turning back to human in a group while naked could be rather awkward.)  I like that there are different forms too, that of human, werewolf, and wolf.  It's also fun that they tend to exhibit canine-like traits while in human form like butt wagging when really happy. It is also cool that they can  talk in all the forms. They just sound a bit different.

Another interesting part is that these two cities are literally side-by-side and you kind of have to shift your way of seeing to be able to take in both places or just one place.  It is really neat how the landscapes overlap and kind of run together.  I love that it shows that although they are seperate worlds almost they are joined.   Seeing both worlds isn't easy for most humans and tends to drive them crazy.  Even for a seasoned undead like Victoria it can be weird switching back and forth between the two.

The romantic relationships and friendships are all handled very well. Victoria has had her share of exes but thinks her new love interest may be the one.  Her exes are an intriguing bunch and they all seem to still care very much for her.

The mystery of who's trying to kill a lot of people/end the world is suitably mysterious and just about everyone is suspected at one point or another.  There are definitely some surprises along the way that I didn't expect.

The end of the book was really cool.  Almost all the big/major bad guys that you can think of show up and Victoria's plan is crazy/potentially deadly.  I also love her new group that has formed by the end of the book. I can't wait to see what happens next in the world of Necropolis.

New characters to adore -

* Sexy Cindy - more than she appears to be and also very good at saving the day (I would totally choose to be a succubus too if it meant I could fly :) ) What more can you ask for than teacher turned street walker turned succubus. (and I would be one too, succubus sisters save the day :) )
* Freddy the Zombie - (surprisingly smart and saves the day in a very interesting way.) love the zombies they are neat and have useful little tricks)
* Rover the white worm -  (would love to have one of these as a pet, I would call him Wilbur.) I would raise and train these for a living if I could.
* Ralph - (a werewolf with a cause, who has a very funny scene involving clothes.) I did lol at this one.
