Liar Liar

The Liar Society by Lisa & Laura Roecker
*Read this book via Around The World ARC Tours
*The highlighted part is a tad spoilery/my feelings on how the book ended :)

This book gets a mysterious 3 gnomes and a gnome hat out of 5 gnomes for having a great take charge female character and a very surprising ending to the story.

This isn't just a happy-go-lucky kind of story like you might expect,  Kate's best friend Grace has died and nobody believes her that Grace's death was no accident.  The set up of the story is well done because the reader gets to see through the chapters both the past and present and how Grace's death directly affected Kate and those around her.

Liam and Seth are the two major love interests that are set up in the book.  Seth has been obsessed with Kate for years but she seems to see him as only a nerd.  There seems to be flickers of interest from Kate for Seth but it doesn't really feel like they could go anywhere.  Liam on the other hand is the kind of standoffish guy who is full of secrets.  He has almost an instant connection with Kate but also a past that leaves her with questions.

This is a suspenseful story that's full of mystery and surprises.  You know that something weird is going on from the very first page, the question is though how could these events be happening.  Kate is quite the detective but their are much stronger forces working against her.  I don't want to spoil who the bad guy is but the bad guy of this book seems to be one that will stick around in the future to bother Kate.

The biggest thing that bothered me was that it was well established that Seth is a conspiracy nut and pretty darn paranoid.  You would think then that he would keep clues or make copies of what they find out and go through.  Maybe that's my own paranoia or too much TV kicking in but I would have copied all the clues and sent them to different TV stations, newspapers and other media outlets throughout the country.  Their biggest downfall I think is that they are too trusting with authority figures.

The ending of this book was a surprise, I know I sure didn't see it coming.  It's the kind of ending that you'll either love or find infuriating.  I would have been happier with a more concrete ending but even though I didn't enjoy the ending, I did like all of the events that led up to it.

  2. @Sullivan yeah, but at least in this one she's only really fixated on the guy for the later half or so of the book.
