Review - The Final Girl Support Group

The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix

My Favorite Quote: "Dying isn't the important thing. It's nothing more than the punctuation mark on the end of your life. It's everything that came before that matters. Punctuation marks, most people skip right over them. They don't even have a sound."

5 out of 5 gnomes

Do you like horror movies, if so this book is definitely for you. I love how it combined all these horror movies/tropes and gives you final girls to root for.

I sped through this book because I didn't want to put it down.

It felt like the best kind of horror movie and was full of surprises and moments that'll make you raise your eyebrows and go "Whoa."

I adore how complicated the main character is and how she never gives up.

Overall I really enjoyed the author's style and the build up in the book. The atmosphere is intense and will have you wondering who to trust.

Then that ending was the cherry on the sundae of it all and tied everything together so very well.

Review - I Wish You All the Best

I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver

5 out of 5 gnomes

A journey of a book/a really strong read.

My Favorite Quote:
“I have a secret method.” “And that is?” He leans in closer and whispers, “I’m making it all up.”

I think this is the first book I've read with a nonbinary character. The main character Ben goes through so much but it's a relatable journey at the same time. You'll find yourself worrying/rooting for them throughout the book.

I love how they grew as a person and the relationship between them and Nathan is so well done.

This story shows how fractured and broken a family can become. It also shows how vital a found family can be.

Overall check out this book ASAP.

Audiobook Review - On the Come Up

On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

Audiobook of On the Come Up by Angie Thomas
Narrated by Bahni Turpin

Phenomenal Flow
Overall: 5 gnomes out of 5 gnomes
Performance: 5 gnomes out of 5 gnomes
Story: 5 gnomes out of 5 gnomes

Angie Thomas has written another fantastic book. The story works extremely well as an audiobook, especially the rap parts. The whole story and characters feel very timely. You’ll definitely feel yourself drawn in and wanting to know what happens next.

Turpin the narrator really excels here too at bringing all these characters to life. I mostly listened while driving and it really makes the commute fly by. I even found myself talking back to it at parts saying things like oh no or don’t do it and of course laughing at some very funny parts.

Bri’s character and all her family and friends are really well done. The side characters along with the main all fell fully fleshed out. Her aspirations to become a star and take care of her family seem like they might just happen at the end of the book.

Story takes a look at how going viral can be good but also plenty of bad. Shines while reading/listening to Bri’s journey and her figuring out who she is and who she wants to be.

Overall really make sure to check out On the Come Up because it’s brilliant. J

Review - Wolfman Confidential

Noir+Mystery+Monsters=terrific third book

* Received from the publisher for review/also bought a copy too.

* 5 out of 5 gnomes

I continue to adore this series. It's like a weird little niche of noir/horror/mystery with a lot of humor thrown in. The world drags you in and the intriguing characters make you want to keep reading and learning more.

The mystery is really well done. The main character Nick has some hard decisions to make in this book and I can't wait to see what happens next.

In other words, if you haven't read this series you should because it's extremely absorbing and fun.

Review - To All the Boys I've Loved Before

5 out of 5 gnomes

This is one of those books that I’ve of course heard about and even bought on kindle but never got around to reading. Then I watched the movie version on Netflix and it was so freaking good/adorable. Both the movie and the book may lead to excessive smiling and actually laughing out loud-itis.

The family, concept, and the whole plot is just so well done. You think that you know where the plot is going but there are a heck of a lot of surprises in there too.

I adore how close the family is. The sisterly relationship felt really authentic. You know the whole love them more than anything but still can get exceedingly mad at them.

Book Josh is a lot skeevier than movie Josh, at least in my opinion.

The movie and the book are just about equal in awesomeness and now I can’t wait to read the rest of the series and hopefully see more movies in the future.

Review/My Favorite Quotes/Lines - Kill the Farm Boy

Kill the Farm Boy (The Tales of Pell) by Delilah S. Dawson and Kevin Hearne

5 out of 5 gnomes

So chock full of punny goodness and funny wordplay. I for one was snort laughing my way through a good portion of this book. Plus now I'm contemplating how awesome bread/cracker based magic powers would be.

Before you know it you'll both be laughing at yet actually caring about all these characters. Toby especially really grew on me. All these characters have some great shining moments in the stories and a lot of funny ones too. Then there's Gustave, I never thought I would be so invested in the antics of a goat.

The chosen one of this story is very entertaining and they meet a heck of a motley crew along the way.

This story is full of surprises and multiple points of view. You'll find yourself questing for knowledge right along with this party trying to figure out what could happen next.

This funny punny book will have you looking at fantasy and all its usual tropes in a new way.

My Favorite Quotes/Lines:

“I AM THE ALL-POWERFUL DARK LORD, AND I WILL HAVE CRACKERS!”

“Hope it ain’t chickens,” she said. “Never trust ’em, what with their poky beaks. And their buttfruit. I tell you, sire, it’s unnatural, eggs is.”

“The healing potion, a cheap brand called NyeQuell, tasted of licorice and unconsciousness, but Fia had to stay awake.”

“…none of them had ever beheld the magical elven Morningwood before, home to the proudest stands of timber anywhere.”

“Taming the challenges of stately Morningwood would no doubt require two ready hands.”

“Pfauggh! Bran, and it’s dry. What’s the point of Morningwood if it can’t even make a muffin moist?”

“I’d rather see the gentle slopes of the Honeymelon Hills,” Argabella confessed. “All these towers and trees…Well, they do insist upon themselves, don’t they?”

“So, how was everyone’s night?” he asked, supposing that if he was going to be uncomfortable, they should very well do the polite thing and join him.”

“Unlike wizards, who boasted of the height and sturdiness of their towers, witches prided themselves on exhibiting only the perkiest cones.”

“He was simply one of the most dangerous creatures in the world: a person of small talent and large purse who was thoroughly certain that he deserved more.”

“He, too, pronounced it “deh-mez-nee,” but Fia knew that those who learned from books frequently mispronounced words that weren’t spoken often. She herself had thought picturesque was pronounced “picture-squee” until she was sixteen.”

“Sorry,” she said. “I’ll try to keep it down. Marmosets are tragically lactose-intolerant, and I missed the mouthfeel of a nice Styffy.”

“Magic is powerful. You can’t just go around eating everything that sparkles!”

“Perhaps that was the way of people: they just needed to matter.”

Review and My Favorite Quotes/Lines - A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares

5 out of 5 gnomes

First Impression After Reading = What a Weird and Wonderful Book.

Wow, this book was fantastic, it's one of those books I really didn't want to end. The whole tone of the book is just so well done.
Esther and Jonah have some crazy chemistry even though they don't really have the best first meeting.
I adore the whole facing your fears aspect of it all and how fear has had so a drastic effect on everybody in her family. Plus the way she gets over some of these fears is pretty entertaining.
I love the more fantastical parts of the story too. Like questioning whether the curse is real or not and whether her grandfather really knows Death.
Then there's the ending which gives you a real WTF moment of maybe everything was true. Story really makes you think about cherishing what you have.

My Favorite Quotes/Lines

“The boy was sobbing quietly, so Esther did what you’re supposed to do when a complete stranger is showing too much emotion in your presence—she ignored him completely.”

“Esther generally avoided talking to people if it wasn’t completely necessary; she sometimes avoided people even when it was completely necessary.”

“You sneaky son of a bitch,” she muttered when she opened it.”

“Why is it I always end up wet when you’re around?”

“If something was once true but now wasn’t, was it ever true?”

“What other beautiful things had fear been hiding from her? What else had the curse long kept her from discovering?”

“Depression was a real sneaky asshole.”

“Little did humans understand that Death, too, was surprised by death sometimes.”

“…then I take them to my favorite place, and then I whip out my secret weapon.” “I sincerely hope the secret weapon is not your genitals.”

“All along she thought he thought he was saving her, but she could see it now; they had both, each of them, been saving little bits of each other.”

“Esther was always surprised by how easy Jonah was able to open locked things; she had a feeling he had the same knack with locked people.”

“This—apparently—is my sense of fashion.” “Good Lord.”

Review and My Favorite Quotes/Lines - Vicious

 Vicious by V.E. Schwab

5 out of 5 gnomes

Truth be told I tried to read this book when it first came out but couldn't get into it. After seeing there was going to be a sequel, I thought hey, why not try it again.

I am very happy I went back to it. This book is intense yet surprising at the same time. There are so many shades of gray with these characters but that’s what makes it so very intriguing.

The structure takes some getting used to as it jumps back and forth in the time line. Once you do though you see that each chapter leads seamlessly into the next.

Like a certain song from the musical Hamilton a lot in the story could be described best by the line, "who lives, who dies, who tells your story." Perspective is key, one character especially believes he's a hero but what he’s doing and why is eminently more fanatical/terrorist-like than good. All the points of view though help fill in the many pieces of why these characters feel/act this way.

Speaking of great points of view, I really adore Sydney and Mitch. Both of their personalities mixed with Victor’s make for a very interesting combo of characters.

Superhero aka ExtraOrdinary powers plus a lot of near death and actual death takes the reader on a hell of a ride. This tale of revenge will have you reading fast to see how everything ends.
___________________________________________

My Favorite Quotes/Lines:

“That may be.” His fingers curled around the shovel. “But half the fun is trying.”

“ExtraOrdinary. The word that started—ruined, changed—everything.”

“Victor didn’t know what to say, so he said the most useless word in the world. “Sorry.”

“The body doesn’t survive on thoughts.”

“Victor Vale was not a fucking sidekick.”

“Victor surprised himself by telling her the truth.”

“Because you don’t think I’m a bad person,” he said. “And I don’t want to prove you wrong.”

“Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.” “I get the feeling that’s not what Thomas Jefferson meant,” muttered Mitch.”

“Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human. The difference between Victor and Eli, he suspected, wasn’t their opinion on EOs. It was their reaction to them.”

“And whoever Victor Vale was, whatever he was, and whatever he was up to, the only thing Mitch knew was that he did not want to be in his way.”

“When no one understands, that’s usually a good sign that you’re wrong.”

“But you’ll have to indulge me. I’ve waited so long to try.”

Review - The Dangerous Art of Blending In

The Dangerous Art of Blending In by Angelo Surmelis

5 out of 5 gnomes

An Important/Intense Story

I could not put this book down. This story will tear at your heart but leave you with a lot of hope at the ending.

Evan has a lot to go through in this book. The abuse he suffers is terrifying and will have you worrying about the character.

Seeing this trauma just makes you imagine how often this happens in the real world too.

Evan figuring out who he can trust is vital to the story. The relationships, even the bad ones are all done extremely well.

Best Part: Now that, that was quite a coming out scene.

Seeing Evan be true to himself and the end of the book makes you imagine a very bright future.

Review and My Favorite Quotes/Lines - The Trials of Apollo: The Burning Maze

The Burning Maze by Rick Riordan

5 out of 5 gnomes

Oh, this series makes me laugh, cry and pretty much every feeling in between.

It feels both dark yet light at the same time. I know there has been death in this series and Riordan's books before but this book really hurts. I think it hurts so much because it will make you feel like just maybe none of the characters are safe.

Yet the humor and heart is still there too. I continue to feel that this series will forever alter the characters from previous series and this series too.

It feels like there's no way this ends well/happily for them but I'm continually surprised in each book. You'll find yourself just caring so much about these characters and not just the main characters, all of the characters.

The characters and their quest will draw you right into the story.

Once again I adore this series and can't wait to see what happens next.

My Favorite Quotes/Lines

“Pretty sure?” Meg asked. “Like last time, when we walked into a bathroom and surprised a Cyclops on the toilet?”

“May the gods defend me from heroes with duct tape. And heroes always seem to have duct tape.”

“TRY THE FRAGGLE ROCK!” I yelled. “Fragaria,” Meg corrected. “WHATEVER!”

“Don’t think about it, I told myself. Dreams aren’t necessarily true. No, I answered myself. Only the bad ones. Like those.”

"That could be my life motto, I thought: He takes a lot of damage."

"The longer I was mortal, the more affected I was by even the smallest loss. I hated being mortal."

I tried not to weep or wet my pants. I succeeded at one of those. I’ll let you decide which.

"With the goddess of plants, insignificant-looking things could be very significant."

“The night is young,” she said. “We could all stab him together.”

"I’d never had a scar before. I wished I could see it as a badge of honor. Instead, I feared that now, whenever I looked down, I would remember the worst night of my life."

"I wondered, not for the first time, why we Greek deities had never created a god of family therapy. We certainly could have used one. Or perhaps we had one before I was born, and she quit. Or Kronos swallowed her whole."

"I found myself crying. It was ridiculous. Gods don’t cry."

"I blinked. “Is that an order?” “It’s a promise.”

"Perhaps this quest had ended on a suspended fourth chord. We still had much to do."

"I would be Apollo. I would remember."

Review - Royals

Royals by Rachel Hawkins

*Received from First to Read for a Review (Used the points I’ve earned on the site to guarantee myself a copy of this one. J)

* Book will be released May 1, 2018

5 out of 5 gnomes

Why should you read Royals?

For lines like this of course:

“A little moment of understanding that feels weirdly nice, given that it comes from a guy who I’m not entirely convinced isn’t a tea cozy cursed by a witch to live as a real-life boy.”

I adore this book. The characters, settings, and relationships are a ton of fun. Royally awesome intrigue equals a read you won't want to let go of.

Daisy's sister is marrying into royalty and that leads to a plethora of problems. Paparazzi plus lots of royal drama leads to some trouble of course.

Daisy and her family are eminently entertaining then when you throw in some Scottish royalty things really take off. Her Dad especially is great and has quite a viewpoint.

This read is full of fluffy goodness and quotable quotes. Like a smile in book form (as corny as that sounds.) You think you know where the story is going but then theree are plenty of surprises too.

Read this book ASAP if you want to laugh and love a book at the same time. This is a book that will definitely make you snort laugh in public.

Review and My Favorite Quotes/Lines - Hot and Badgered

Hot and Badgered by Shelly Laurenston

5/5 gnomes

Wow, I have never read this author before but after seeing a review online, I thought why now check it out. This book was exactly what I needed, actually laugh out loud funny and characters that are great to root for. I should have known I'd adore this book when books have weird or punny titles, I usually like them more often than not.

I love a good book about shifters and this is definitely a great book about shifters. The world is set up really well and I like how all the different groups are explained and the many different habits they all have. Then there are the very interesting hybrids that are seen including the main character Charlie and her sister Stevie. Imaging all the different hybrids and what they could be capable of really makes you think.

Family plays a giant role in this book. The sisters and the triplets that they meet along with the other shifter families are crazy entertaining.

The story had me hooked from the beginning when you first see the sisters as children (talk about intense but it does really help set up the rest of the book.)

My Favorite Quotes/Lines

* Spoilers are highlighted like so J

“Female grizzlies were the most feared among the shifters. Not only were they psychotically protective of those they considered family—blood or otherwise—they were, like the males, easily startled.”

“No, sweetie. It was just a honey badger thing to say. Nothing to worry about. I say honey badger things all the time but never do them.”

“A Charlie warning was serious stuff, and you ignored it at your own peril.”

“Stevie! Stevie!” When her sister didn’t respond, Charlie released her and threw up her hands. “I’ve killed her. Of course I’ve killed her. I knew one day I’d kill you all.”

“Oh, trust me,” Charlie admitted. “We are such freaks.”

“A dripping honeycomb was in her hand and hundreds of angry bees were hanging from her face like some bizarre tribal mask.”

“You stray-dog this, Berg. You stray-dog this!”

“I mean, if they’re going to use us as an object lesson . . . maybe it’s time we make a lesson of them.”

“Max had poor Stevie in a chokehold and was telling her, “Sleep. Just go to sleep. Shhhhhh.”

“I didn’t thank you yet,” she reminded him. “And keep that attitude going, I may never.”

“That’s because you’re you.”

“Sweetie, you don’t do coquettish well, so stop that.”

“And when he cuts your heart out, I will dine on it with a good Scottish ale, you worthless son of a bitch!”

“Well, most shifter guys aren’t making the move.” “Why not?” “We like our faces attached to us rather than on the floor . . . in front of us.”

“Charlie, if you are feeling moody and need to bake, there are, um, requests here.” “Requests?”

“The MacKilligan sisters didn’t know how not to make an impression.”

“Bitch, get off my coffee table,” Britta said as she passed through the living room.”

“Max grinned. “But I’m a happy psychotic!”

“Well, she hated you before,” Stevie explained. “Now her hate is just enhanced.”

“Not to be rude but if either of you find a man . . . you need to hold that man.”

“Such poor decision making.”

Review/My Favorite Quotes/Lines - More Than We Can Tell

More Than We Can Tell by Brigid Kemmerer

5 gnomes out of 5 gnomes

Feelings after Reading = Love for all these characters especially Rev and Declan, happy at where things ended up.

This is the kind of book that will have you racing to finish it and staying up way past bedtime. I loved so much about this book. Rev's story will break your heart but watching him grow over the course of the story will have you cheering. The characters and all the relationships are so well done. Lots of heavy subjects but the kind of story that will have you really rooting for these characters to have happy futures.

The family dynamics here especially felt realistic and messy just like real life. Rev's parents who were his foster and then adoptive parents were wonderful and had such a strong relationship with Rev and his friends.

Rev and Emma have their share of problems but there is definitely chemistry between them almost immediately. I like their meeting and the whole wondering if it's all fate aspect.

Rev and Declan's friendship is probably the best relationship that I've read about in quite a while. I adore how they are so understanding and always there for each other.

Overall if you love reading about characters that will make you care very much about them check out this book ASAP.

My Favorite Quotes/Lines:

“Oh, good. I’ve made it more awkward.”

“I think you can cry over a dumb troll if I can lose my mind over a stupid sweatshirt.” I drag a hand through my hair. I feel wrung out.”

“Because he’s not my father. He’s my dad.”

“We all push sometimes, just to make sure someone is on the other side, pushing back.”

“It reminds me of Dad’s comment about how we have to ask questions to hear the quiet people.”

“So we’re both just a little broken.”

Review and My Favorite Quotes/Lines - The Wolf Lord

The Wolf Lord by Ann Aguirre

* book provided by the author for review.

5 out of 5 gnomes

Feelings After Reading - If I might borrow from a certain Tim McGraw song, ♫"...I like it, I love it, I want some more of it." ♫ I love this series more and more with each book.

I really adore the Ars Numina world and all the different groups that are within it. There are so many intriguing personalities. Mixing the Eldrich with the Animari can get really intense. Having Thalia a princess who wants to be Queen marry Raff the pack leader of the Wolves makes for one heck of a great story. The world building of this series is so well done and you will definitely find yourself wanting to know what's going to happen next ASAP.

Digging deeper into these characters after seeing them in the other books was refreshing. They are not what I expected but even better. Thalia and Raff are an unexpected yet perfect pair. They complement each other so well even though they seem like polar opposites at first. Though there is plenty of friction and problems along the way. Politics + a political marriage+plenty of intrigue leads to a story that is steamy and full of awesomeness.

This series continues to shine and this book especially really moves the world forward.

P.S. - Now this would be the couple that I'm very interesting in seeing if they have children because I'm betting that kid would be something entirely great.

“I already knew this wouldn’t be easy. Doesn’t take a Seer to know that.”

“If I’m good at anything, it’s reading people’s hearts. And I’m betting my life that she keeps her promises,” he said.”

“Dammit all, she caught me being sincere.”

“I’m not in the habit of saying shit I don’t mean.”

“Mockery has unkindness at its heart while teasing springs from affection.”

“One may be conquered, but two can defend, back to back, joined in common cause.”

“I guess that’s my job now. No escape from the big, bad wolf.”

“Do you ever think about running away from it all?”
“Never,” she said.
“Me either. Hardly ever. Only like six or eight times a day.”

“You pretend that you aren’t clever, Raff Pineda, but I find that you know what people need exceptionally well.”

“Yes, princess. Tell me a filthy bedtime story.”

“But…I’m starting to suspect that marriage to me might be hazardous to your health.”

“Such candor was a rare sort of courage, an example he should follow.”

“Sure, he’d lived through no ability of his own, but picking the right mate, that was a fucking skill, too.”

“Responsibility looks good on you, wolf lord.”
