“Tempus Sanders, aka the Sandman (yes, the Sandman) was the biggest elf I’d ever seen.”

“Hey, Olive.”

“Is that a funeral home?”

“I still needed some sugar.”

“Juniper gasped.”

“I turned to see what the sheriff was talking about.”

“Since Cooper hadn’t left yet, I told him my suspicions and that I was going home to talk to my dad about them.”

“I didn’t know what he wanted, but it didn’t sound good from the sternness of his shout.”

“Greyson was right on time to pick me up.”

Luna hadn’t made me feel this way, but then I’d met Luna in a room with several hundred other people.”

“I straightened up.”

“I love my bed.”

“The second and final signing was twenty minutes away and everything was as ready as it could be.”

“Sanders wasn’t just happy that Luna had shown up, he was ecstatic.”

“Another signing, another success.”

“I straightened with a groan.”

“Greyson wasn’t a kidder, but I still had to ask.”

“We should call the sheriff, get something official going,” Greyson said.”

“Of course time was running out.”

“He answered in record time.”

“Juggling my phone while pushing the bike down the sidewalk wasn’t easy, but I managed.”

“The lights came on next, showing off the room in all its awful, morbid glory, but all I could think about was hiding.”

Review - Miss Frost Ices the Imp

Miss Frost Ices the Imp by Kristen Painter

3 gnomes out of 5 gnomes

I liked but didn’t love this second book. The characters are still awesome and everything but the mystery just didn’t feel big enough this time and the consequences and danger weren’t really there for the most part. It kind of read more like a short story than a whole book if that makes sense.

The love triangle feels a bit more grating this time. I really hope it’s featured less in the next book. There were a couple of loose ends I’m wondering about too that hopefully get resolved ASAP.

My favorite development in this book had to be Spider, that is one entertaining cat. I also like how connected the whole town is and how relationships continue to grow.

Overall a good addition to the series and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.

Sentence Sneak Peek - Miss Frost Ices the Imp

The first sentence from each chapter of Miss Frost Ices the Imp, it's a mini summary of what you can expect to read.

“I sucked in a giddy breath as my gaze landed on the tackiest, most wonderful thing I’d ever seen.”

“Cooper offered to help me set up the rug, so I let him.”

Greyson didn’t technically meet me at Mummy’s since I arrived ahead of him.”

“Greyson walked me to the warehouse door and said good-bye to me there with a too-brief kiss.”

“Weird how?”

“I’d never heard the obvious stated quite so ominously.”

“I can’t lie.

“But that means telling your grandmother,” Delaney exclaimed.”

“In my office,” I responded.”

“The Greshams’ old Victorian looked a lot different at night than it had yesterday morning.”

“I knew I liked Birdie, but after she placed her breakfast order, I realized she might actually be my spirit animal.”

“I sat down at my desk, picked up the globe, and pushed the button to accept the call.”

“Cooper and I settled into the last available booth.”

“The box of goodies went into the employee break room (after Juniper and Kip helped themselves to a few select items), and Delaney and I settled into my office.”

“Later that day, Corette called to say the visibility spell was in place and that she’d designed it so the imp would only be visible to supernatural eyes.”

“No longer caring about the flash, I snapped as many pics as I could as fast as possible and hoped the light couldn’t be seen by whoever was approaching.”

“You have to be more careful.”

“Matilda Sharpe came around from the back of the cottage as we got out of the car.”

“I showed up at Cooper’s that evening after work in my tiniest sundress, strappy sandals, a push-up bra and full makeup and hair.”

“Juniper walked in behind her.”

“Corette called just as I finished giving Spider his dinner.”

“As early as possible the next morning, Delaney had Stanhill drive us out to see Matilda Sharpe once again.”

This Week

With all the craziness of last week along with not feeling well for much of last week, I’ve gotten more than a little bit behind on reading. I’ll probably need most of this week to catch up so will post sporadically if at all.

My Favorite Quotes/Lines - The Sun Is Also a Star

The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon

* Spoilers are highlighted like so :)

“To be clear: I don’t believe in fate. But I’m desperate.”

“I’m going to pretend my future’s wide open, and that anything can happen.”

“However, if the long shot is your only shot, then you have to take it.”

“HUMAN BEINGS ARE NOT REASONABLE creatures.”

“But how can you trust something that can end as suddenly as it begins?”

“That little black notebook I saw you scribbling in, and your face. Your big, wide-open, couldn’t-fool-anybody-about-anything face says you’re going to.”

“I scour his face for a sign that he’s joking, but no— he really does believe it. Which is sweet. Also stupid. But mostly sweet.”

“If people who were actually born here had to prove they were worthy enough to live in America, this would be a much less populated country.”

“My mother, the pacifist, would kill me dead if she knew what I’d just done.”

“But I’m not dead inside either.”

“Observable Fact: I have a thing for butts.”

“The thing about falling is you don’t have any control on your way down.”

“This connection between us that we don’t understand and we don’t want to let go of? That’s God.” “Holy hell,” she exclaims. “You poet boys are dangerous.”

“Something about being with her makes me my best self.”

Happy, horny, and hopeful.

“A simple search for
Connection.
To see.
To be seen.”

“But of course, this is the problem. We already have that power over each other.”

“What a difference a day makes,” he says.”

“Even if we can’t see it, the light is still there.”

“Maybe their universe is just taking longer to form.”

His face is wide open and his world is full of love.”

Review - The Sun Is Also a Star

The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon

5 out of 5 gnomes

Wow, wow, wow. Nicola Yoon is definitely now an auto buy author for me now. Her writing is so vivid and it just pulls you and all of your feelings into the story. May I just say that this story was messy, beautiful, and will make you think a lot.

Natasha and Daniel are strangers that have one heck of a day when their lives intersect. This whole story will really make you wonder/contemplate happenstance and fate. The whole conflict and give and take is just very well done.

You get to see the perspective of just about every character in the story and get their background/or a history of a thing or concept.

I love that the story shows how each interaction you have with the world can profoundly change you or someone else. It shows just how connected everyone and everything really can be.

When I thought I knew where the story was going it zigged and then zagged in an even more interesting direction. Then there was that ending which put the biggest smile on my face. It pretty much capped off the whole book perfectly.

My Favorite Quotes/Lines - Iron Man: The Gauntlet

Iron Man: The Gauntlet by Eoin Colfer

* Read via NetGalley for review
* Spoilers are highlighted like so :)

“Tony wondered later why his father kept minigrenades in his drawer and whether that was even legal.”

“Tony Stark’s startle reflex had always been somewhat exaggerated, or as Nick Fury had once put it: “Stark, you are jumpier than a sack of guilt.”

“Tony, baby, you gotta stop talking to yourself. Folks will think you’re crazy.”

With great power . . . and so on and so forth.
And if there was one thing Tony had always hated, it was responsibility.”

“Rhodey had a name for a face like that; he called it “punchably smug,” which Tony had never really gotten until now, probably because he was a pretty smug guy himself most of the time.”

It is not enough To fill the hole. But climb the hill To win your soul.

Review - Iron Man: The Gauntlet

Iron Man: The Gauntlet by Eoin Colfer

* Read via NetGalley for review

4 out of 5 gnomes

This book is so much fun. It would make a really great cartoon or movie. Everything is really easy to visualize especially if you’ve seen any of the Iron Man movies. The author really gets this character and makes you care for/curious about each new character you meet.

I like this author’s writing style, I don’t know how to phrase it really but it all reads really comic book like and makes the story come to life more. The tone and changing viewpoints just let the story fly by.

I don’t want to spoil anything but let’s just say the conflict was very surprising. Plus it was really an intense read. There was plenty of humor and snarkiness to go along with the action too.

The ending was a nice twist and I love how it tied back to the beginning of the story.
